Mashable has today reported on the launch of YouTube for Schools.  The new service from YouTube has been designed to give schools’ access to YouTube’s vast vault of content but in a more controlled way.

The concept behind YouTube for Schools is that teachers will be able to give access to the YouTube platform to their class without the worry that they will be distracted by other non-educational content.  Subsequently, the site will operate with an important setting that will restrict access

According to the story, to help balance the content, YouTube worked with teachers and 600 organisations such as the Smithsonian and TED to select and curate the available content. There are also more than 400 playlists sorted by grade level and subject including Science, English, Math, Social Studies more.

We’re a strong believer in a brand’s role as a curator of content, picking and choosing the best pieces of social content to help represent their brand purpose. Extending such an approach into the education space and to take advantage of YouTube’s enormous content is a fantastic step forward. It’s also another shining example of how younger generations will develop and learn in the digital age.
